1. Cade Brown - Bellingham
Brown goes down in Bellingham High School Cross Country history as the first ever cross state champion after winning the 2A state race last fall. Brown ran 3 personal best times this spring in the 800 (2:01.68), the 1600 (4:24.35), and the 3200 (9:16.34). He managed to run his 1600 and 3200 personal best times at the 2A State Track meet finishing 5th in the 1600 and 2nd in the 3200. Brown will continue his running career at Yale University next fall.
2. Tate Hutchins - Lynden
At one point had the number one 800 time in the state at the 2A level and was a heavy favorite to win the this year's state title. The junior from Lynden added more 2 medals to his fantastic resume this spring finishing 4th in both the 800 and 1600. Hutchins ran personal best times at the state meet of 1:55.77 in the 800 and 4:22.65 in the 1600. He also ran a sub 10 minute 2 mile earlier in the season going 9:51.73 at the Lakewood Invite. Definitely a senior season we all will be looking forward to watching next fall and spring.
3. Eric Steiger - Lynden Christian
Why not break your own school record in the 3200 twice in one season? Eric Steiger is the most successful Lynden Christian distance runner in school history, with a total of 8 state medals, including a 2nd place finish this year in the 3200. Steiger ran personal bests of 2:00.71, 4:24.51, and 9:35.46. His 4:24.51 mile came at the 1A State Track meet this finishing in 4th. The LC senior continues his running career at Dordt College next fall along side his training partner, Brooks DeWaard.
4. Lucas Cunningham - Sehome
Sehome junior Lucas Cunningham made a lot of noise this track season. Cunningham ran personal best times of 1:55.2 and 4:28.37. With his 2nd place finish at the state meet, Cunningham holds the number 1 spot as the fastest 800 meter runner in Whatcom County in 2018. Cunningham also upset Lynden's Hutchins in the same 2A state 800 race to claim the top county thrown. Look for this soon to be senior to lead the Mariners to yet another state championship next fall during the cross season.
5. Brooks DeWaard - Lynden Christian
Another Lynden Christian distance runner going down in the books as the best to come through the high school. Brooks DeWaard capped off his fantastic high school career with a 4th place finish in the 1600 and 7th place finish in the 3200 at the 1A State Track Meet. DeWaard ran his best 1600 mark of the season in 4:26.29 at the 1A Bi-District Meet. He also ran a season best time of 9:53.14 at the Bi-District Meet in the 3200. DeWaard joins fellow teammate Steiger at Dordt College next fall on the cross and track teams.
6. Jonah Salomon - Squalicum
After a 1st place finish this year at the Bedlington Twilight Invite in the 1600, senior Jonah Salomon became the face of Squalicum track and field this year posting great times in the 1600 and 3200. Salomon ran 4:32.48 and 9:52.66, both during post season action. Unable to qualify due to the fact the 3A competition up here is insanely good, he still proved to be one of the top runners in Whatcom County this year.
7. Jacob Alexander - Sehome
Sehome sophomore Jacob Alexander improved his numbers big time this track season running 4:33.36 in the 1600 and 9:52.65 in the 3200. Alexander finishes in the top 10 in both events in the Northwest Conference and was the fastest sophomore in the 3200 in Whatcom County this spring. Look for him to run really well next fall for the Mariners.
8. Isaiah Ellis - Lynden
Despite catching pneumonia during post-season action, Lynden sophomore Isaiah Ellis was without a doubt the best all-around sophomore distance runner in Whatcom County. Ellis ran 2:02.49 in the 800 and 4:30.09 in the 1600. With Tate Hutchins along side him, these two were one of the best duos this spring in the Northwest Conference and at the 2A State level in Washington.
9. Abbas Theophilus - Meridian
1 of 4 Trojans to make it to the 1A State Track Meet in the 3200, junior Abbas Theophilus put tons of time and effort over the offseason to get himself where he was this spring. Big improvements from his sophomore track season to this year as he ran 4:34.08 in the 1600 and 9:56.4 in the 3200. Returns to the Trojans cross country team for another successful year to come.
10. Landon Sturdevant - Ferndale
When was the last time you saw a freshman in high school run under 2 minutes in the 800 in this area? Ferndale's Landon Sturdevant ran 1:59.44 in the 800 at the Shoreline Invite becoming the first freshman in school history to break the 2 minute barrier. Sturdevant also ran 4:39.72 in the 1600. The fastest freshman distance runner in Whatcom County got lots of eyes on him for sure this year.
