Burlington, WA - It was a big day for Burlington-Edison's Carson Lee winning the 1,600 and 3,200 in a Northwest Conference Tri-Meet against Lynden Christian and Meridian yesterday, March 14, at Burlington-Edison High School.
Lee ran 5:19.72 in the 1,600 and 12:06.31 in the 3,200. Both times are season best performances.
James Cox finished in second behind Lee in the 1,600 running 5:29.58. His time is a personal best.
In the 800, Meridian had four runners finish in the top five with Abbas Theophilus leading the Trojans with the win running a time of 2:10.02.
Jaskaran Dhatt (2nd, 2:12.74), Nathan Schneider (3rd, 2:18.98), and Walker DeWaard (Tied for 4th, 2:26.6) were the three other Trojans to finish behind Theophilus.
Lynden Christian's Jorren Bishop was the lone distance runner for the Lyncs and his race was the 800 where he tied for fourth place with DeWaard running 2:26.6.
The Burlington-Edison girl's got two wins out of Lexy Watson and Mila Hoagland in their meet.
Watson came from behind in the 800 to beat Meridian's Makenna Holz (2nd, 2:42.03) running a time of 2:41.53.
Watson was in fourth place heading into the final lap of the race before she started passing other runners with 250 meters to go and caught Holz on the final 50 meters.
Hoagland won the 3,200 race in her high school track and field debut with a time of 13:05.31.
Hoagland took an early lead for the first three laps before Meridian's Kendyl Otter (2nd, 13:17) caught up to her and it would be a back and forth battle for another three.
With 800 remaining, Hoagland began to surge away from Otter and was well on her way to win the 3,200 by a significant amount.
However, Meridian didn't go away empty handed as Kayla Aalpoel won the 1,600 in her high school track and field debut.
Aalpoel and Burlington's Aimee Slotemaker were together for the first 1,000 meters and appeared to be a battle to the end.
On the final 400, Aalpoel reminded everyone why she placed so high at the 1A state cross meet this past fall and beat Slotemaker by six seconds with a big sprint at the end.
Lynden Christian's top finishers were Simone Veltkamp and Maya Ewing placing third in the 800 and 1,600.
Both Lynden Christian and Meridian will be at the Bedlington Twilight Invite on March 22 at Lynden High School and Burlington will be at the Chuck Randall Relays on March 23 at Arlington High School in their next contests.
