Rexburg, ID - The Madison Bobcats boys open up the cross country season with a great team effort in both the freshman/sophomore and junior/senior races at the Madison Dash winning both races as a team this past Friday, August 28, at Madison High School in Rexburg, Idaho.
In the junior/senior race, the Bobcats were nearly perfect scoring 19 points and were led by Will Dixon as he broke the 10-minute barrier for the two-mile race running the fastest time of the day in 9:58.6. Last fall, Dixon was fourth at the IHSAA 5A Cross Country State Championships running a 5k personal best time of 15:43.4.
Four other runners from Madison finished in the top 10 as well with Ryan Stutz and Daniel Godfrey placing second and third running 10:05.9 and 10:08.1 and Hinckley Manner and Taylor Allen placing sixth and seventh running 10:27.5 and 10:35.4.
Rigby, who was second with 49 points, had three runners in the top 10 led by the fourth place finish from Benjamin Ricks in a time of 10:11, and eighth and ninth place finishes from Nathan Fielding and Trevor Bradley in times of 10:40.8 and 10:42.3.
Thunder Ridge's Seth Bingham, who was eighth at the 5A state championships, was fifth running 10:23.2 and West Jefferson's Hyrum Spencer, who was fourth at the 2A state championships, was 10th running 10:43.
Liam Godfrey came away with a close win by five seconds running 10:52.5 in the freshman/sophomore race for Madison. Despite Godfrey being the only runner in the top 10 from Madison, the Bobcats managed to score 58 points to finish first as a team.
Sugar-Salem finished behind Madison with 64 points and three runners finishing in the top 10 as Porter Holt and Mason Smith were fourth and fifth running 11:27.6 and 11:28.3 and Haden Grover was seventh running 11:38.1.
Rigby wasn't too far behind in the team standings either finsihing third with 68 points as Spencer Nelson and Connor Reilly placed sixth and eighth running 11:34.3 and 11:39.8. Thunder Ridge was the final school with multiple runners in the top 10 as well with Austin Attebury getting third in 11:18.6, and Brandon Ellis placing 10th running 11:52.3.
Zack Johnson of North Fremont was second in a time of 10:57.6, and Daniel Spencer of West Jefferson was ninth running 11:47.8.
On the girl's side, 3A state runner-up from last fall, Sugar-Salem's Jaresa Jackson, won the junior/senior race running 12:31.2 and the Diggers won by nine scoring 49 points over Madison's 58 points. Jackson's teammate, Ryley Klingler, placed eighth at the 3A state race last fall, was fourth for the Diggers running 13:09.6.
Mikelle Dorman of Madison was the Bobcats top runner for their second place team running 13:24.5 placing seventh overall.
Thunder Ridge's Jessica Moss was the runner-up running 12:36.5, and Hailey Thueson placed third running 12:41.6. Rigby's Rainey Gullop was fifth running 13:14.8 and Shannon Sievers was 10th running 13:34.7.
West Jefferson's Elizabeth Spencer and Kaylee Dalling were sixth and ninth running 13:18.8 and 13:26.7, and Firth's Cassi Robbins placed eighth running 13:26.5.
Sophomore duo of Rebekah Kinghorn and Ruby Barrus led Madison to a first place team finish scoring 42 points by placing first and second in the freshman/sophomore race running 12:41.2 and 13:05.4. Thunder Ridge's Courtney Earl was third running 13:25.3.
Rigby scores 65 points to finish second as Alexis McGary and Rachel Nelson were eighth and ninth running 13:51.1 and 13:53. McKenzie Winegar and Sage Lyon were fourth and sixth running 13:44.9 and 13:45.8 for South Fremont.
Other top individuals were Shelley's Breanna Williams (5th, 13:45.2), and Sugar-Salem's Kate Dickson (7th, 13:47.6) and Brooklyn Smith (10th, 13:54.4).
