Jamborees Kick Off 2019 Track Season

Bellingham, WA - The track and field season begins this week with a few jamborees around the state of Washington to see where athletes are at in early season competition.

It was an Aberdeen boys top-three sweep in the 1,600 meter race at the Montesano Jamboree this past Monday with junior Jordan McKinney taking the win running 5:02.99.


Freshmen Julian Campos and Gary Sherman finished behind their teammate in second and third running 5:03.33 and 5:08.87.


Other top runners from various schools in the boys race were Castle Rock's Jeran Keogh (4th, 5:15.31) and Rainier's Ryan Doidge (7th, 5:30.09).


Saint Martin's signee Elaina Hansen won the girls 1,600 meter race in dominating fashion winning by 19 seconds in 5:33.40.


Hansen finished second in the 2B 1,600 state race last spring running 5:26.43 and finished fourth at the 1B/2B state cross country race this past fall.


Hansen's teammate, freshman Selena Niemi, placed second running a personal best time of 5:52.50.


Aberdeen's Skyler Taylor rounds of the top three running 6:19.6 in the girls race for the Bobcats.


Freshman Charlize Gutierrez ran 6:29.82 for a sixth place finish and was Wishkah Valley's top competitor.


League meets begin tomorrow around the state including the Northwest Conference "City Meet" featuring Bellingham great Annika Reiss and Sehome's Cameron Hodges in the girls meet and Sehome's Lucas Cunningham and Jacob Alexander in the boys meet.


There will also be league meets at Sedro-Woolley, Mount Tahoma and La Conner.
