Mount Si's Waskom, Issaquah's David-Smith Impressive in Season Debuts

Issaquah, WA - Two highly elite runners at the high school level in Mount Si's Joe Waskom and Issaquah's Julia David-Smith made their season debut yesterday, March 21, with incredible races in a KingCo Conference dual meet at Issaquah High School.


Waskom, the 4A state cross country champion from this fall, ran a personal best time of 1:56.62 in the 800 boy's race winning by eight seconds over Issaquah Jasper Fuhs, who ran 2:04.18.


The Mount Si senior is the defending 4A state champion in the 3,200 and finished third in 1,600 last spring at the state meet.


The University of Washington commit is a big favorite to repeat in the 3,200 and win the 1,600 as well in his final year of high school track.


David-Smith, a third place finisher in the 1,600 and 3,200 at the 4A state track meet last spring, won the girl's 800 and 1,600 races by a landslide running 2:22.76 and 5:02.1.


The Issaquah sophomore placed second overall this past fall at the 4A state cross country meet and is a returning contender in both the 1,600 and 3,200 at this years state track meet.


The Eagles also had four runners, including David-Smith, win races in their meets to put up good points for their teams.


Sam Griffith won the 1,600 (4:29.99) and Allen Aby won the 3,200 (10:27.36) in the boy's races, and Jenna Heesacker won the 3,200 (12:05.24) in the girl's race.


Other top finishers for Issaquah were Alec Barran (3rd, 2:04.18) in the boy's 800 and Katie Riley (2:34.86) in the girl's 800.


Alex Darragh (4:49.09) was third in the boy's 1,600 and Emma Jordan (5:29.39) and Heesacker (5:35.86) were second and third in the girl's 1,600.


Mount Si's Austin Gappa finished second in the boy's 1,600 running 4:38.75.


Ravenna Vaden was the Wildcats top girl placing third in the 800 running 2:39.28. Mackenzie Saunders (12:27.6) and Addie Kaess (12:38.64) rounded up the top three in the 3,200 placing second and third.


Mount Si will return to the track this Saturday, March 23, at the Ram Relays in Yakima and Issaquah will be at Skyline High School next week on Thursday, March 28.
