EUGENE, ORE - Washington athletes were well represented on day one of the Nike Outdoor Nationals as the four-day meet got underway at Hayward Field on Thursday.
Eisenhower freshman Olive Clark ran to a strong effort in the girls freshman one-mile, running a time of 5 minutes, 8.29 seconds to finish eighth in a competitive field.
Clark was 16th at the 4A state meet a few weeks back at Mt. Tahom High School where she ran 5:18.66 for the 1,600. She also was on the Cadets 4x400 relay team that placed fourth in a time of 4:03.50.
A battle of two of the top 1A runners in the boys freshman one-mile race saw finishes in the top 30 as Duncan Frisbie-Smith of Bush, sixth at 1A state in the 3,200 (10:04.20), took 23rd in a personal best time of 4:37.76, and Seton Catholic's Sam Soto was 27th in a personal best 4:38.62.
Drew Kolenski of Lakeside in Seattle was 39th in the field in a time of 4:40.65.
The only championship race of the day was the 5,000-meter final featuring four Washington athletes highlighted by three top 15 finishes in the girls race.
Between the combined two heats, Lincoln of Seattle's Tali Braester was eighth overall in a new personal best time of 17:29.15, crushing her cross-country 5k PR of 18:03.6 from this fall.
Skyline freshman Sydney Collier, who recently took first in the 2k steeplechase at a USATF event, was ninth in 17:37.8. Meridian's Kayla Aalpoel, three-time 1A state runner-up, was 12th in a personal best 17:54.63.
Bishop Blanchet's Tyler Graff, a University of Idaho commit, ran 15:22.83 in the boys race to place 21st.
Central Valley's Aaron Wright placed fourth in the freshman boys 400 with a time of 52.07.
Arlington's Noah Bumgardner took 16th in the freshman boys two-mile, running 10:37.15.
