SEATTLE - Any high school sports fan in the state of Washington knows what Brayden Platt can do on the football field.
The four-star linebacker from Yelm, with offers from Washington, Oregon and USC, scored 19 touchdowns on offense and led the Tornados' football program to a historic 14-0 record this past season that was capped off by the school's first-ever state championship win over Eastside Catholic in one of the most thrilling games the state has ever witnessed.
It may be sport he's received the most accolades for but it's also not the only sport he shines in.
When Platt steps into the shot put ring during the track season, those who watch witness him putting on a clinic, and Sunday at the Dempsey Indoor Facility was just another one of those.
Making his first-ever appearance in an indoor meet, Platt began his 2023 season with a first-place finish in the boys shot put at the Washington High School Invitational, throwing 60 feet, 9.25 inches to place him No. 6 in the country this season.
"I didn't much training in the offseason as I would have wanted to for shot, but being able to get close to a PR felt good," Platt said.
Platt threw within nine inches of his personal best throw of 61-06, which came at the state championships last season when he won the 3A title. He also was second in both the discus (152-11) and javelin (191-09).
Weeks after state last spring, Platt continued to throw well at the Nike Outdoor Nationals meet where he finished second in shot put with a mark of 60-08 and finished second again in the javelin in a personal best throw of 214-00.5.
Another throwing standout who continues to climb up the national leaderboard board is King's Adrianna Coleman as she won the girls weight throw with a mark of 53-00.75, just a foot off her personal best which ranks second in the nation. She also finished fifth in the shot put with a mark of 36-05.75.
Bothell's Haedyn Bambolo, a University of Arizona commit, threw a U.S. No. 8 mark of 44-08 in girls shot put for the win.
Sehome's Jake Andrews and Bear Creek's Braelyn Baker completed the 200 and 400 sweep with Andrews winning on the boys side and Baker on the girls side.
Andrews and Baker set meet records in the 400 races as Andrews ran 47.28 to best Chase Wells' boys record of 48.90 from 2018 and Baker ran 56.46 to surpass Mikaela Smith's girls record of 56.46 from 2015.
Andrews also broke Cristian Moore's 200 meet record time of 21.94 as he ran 21.60 to beat out Clovis North's (California) Nickolas Miller. Baker won the 200 in 24.62.
Puyallup's Micah Bach ran two personal best times in the boys 60 as he ran 6.88 in the preliminary heats, followed by 6.83 in finals to come out with the win. Bach's time eclipsed Micah Williams' meet record time of 6.88 from 2018.
Emerald Ridge's JaiCieonna Gero-Holt picked up two wins in the girls high jump and 60 hurdles. She jumped meet-record jump of 5-08.75 to win high jump and won the 60 hurdles in 8.98 seconds over Ida B. Wells' (Oregon) Avery Coker at the line. Gero-Holt also finished second in shot put with a personal best throw of 39-11.5.
Andre Korbmacher of Squalicum set another meet record in the boys 60 hurdles with a time of 7.75 seconds, obliterating Chris Diaz's meet record time of 8.07 from 2015.
Pole vaulters Jacqueline Jones and Caleb King won their respective competitions with the freshman from Inlgemoor clearing 12-05.5 for girls and the senior from Bellevue Christian clearing 14-05.25 for boys.
Other winners from the meet included Glacier Peak's Jana Willems in the girls 60 (7.72), Curtis' Titus Morris in the boys long jump (22-09) and Bishop Blanchet's Vincent Recupero in the boys mile (4:23.15).
Other top highlights:
- Lakes' Cruize Corvin, Recupero and Walla Walla's Brody Hartley ran below the meet record time in the boys 3,000 as Corvin finished second in 8:26.12, Recupero was third in 8:27.88 and Hartley placed fourth in 8:30.90. Mercer Island's Owen Powell clocked 8:32.91 to finish sixth and Seattle Prep's Jack Henzke was eighth in 8:34.80.
- Mead's Dominik Corley, a day after competing in the Husky Classic in the men's 60, placed third in the boy's 200 in a time of 22.06. Colville's Allan Mckeraghan finished fourth in 22.23 and Lincoln's (Tacoma) Jonathan Frazier was fifth in 22.25. Walla Walla's Jake Hisaw took eighth in 22.65.
- Frazier ran a personal best 8.29 to finish second behind Korbmacher in the boys 60 hurdles. Mariner's Jaquan Means took third in 8.41 and Kentridge's Jonah Tongco was fifth in a personal best 8.54.
- Skyline's Rebecca O'Keefe ran a strong race in the girls mile, running a personal best time of 4:53.59 to finish in third.
- Shorewood's Ava Enriquez, fifth at 3A state last season in pole vault, finished second in the event with a clearance of 11-11.75. Jackson's Sydney Mohlman, fifth at 4A state, cleared a personal best height of 11-05.75 to place third.
- Federal Way's Roman Hutchinson goes 46-00.25, a personal best, in the boys triple jump to place second overall. Mali Stermer of Lincoln (Seattle) also finishes second in girls triple jump with a personal best mark 37-01.75.
- Union's Charlotte Wilson ran 10:20.25 to finish eighth in the girls 3,000. Skyline's Sydney Collier took 10th in 10:25.24.
- Morris and Garfield's Tawaf Aboudo placed fourth and sixth, respectively, in the boys 60 final, running 6.95 and 7.07.
- Tahoma's Brooke Lyons earned two second place finishes in the girls 60 and 200 races with times of 7.77 and 25.16.
- Garfield's Takiyah Blue finished third in the girls 200 after winning heat one in 25.44. Curtis' Ava Simms was fifth with a time of 25.87.
- Simms and Sehome's Jayda Darroch followed Baker to complete a 1-3 sweep as Simms ran 57.53 for seconds and Darroch ran 57.80 for third.
- Lake Washington's Alexa Matora finished fourth overall in the girls 800 in a time of 2:15.65, just a second of her personal best.
- Bellingham's Javen Livas, fifth at 2A state in shot put, threw a personal best mark of 53-02.25 to place second.
