A look back at invite highlights of the weekend of April 23, 2022, in high school track.
In the first return of the Gear Up Eason Invite since the 2019 season, the Sehome boys electrified the track with great individual performances, all leading up to winning the team title scoring 68 points.
Sprint stars Jake Andrews and Carter Birade each won two races on the sprint and hurdle sides scoring 40 points combined. Birade won the boys 100-meter in 10.70 seconds and the 110 hurdles in a personal best 14.08. Andrews won the 200 and 400 races in 22.02 and 48.43.
Zack Munson ran a personal best effort in the boys 1,600, leading a trio of Whatcom Country finishers in the top three running 4:13.43. Lynden Christian's Andrew Luce and Bellingham's Will Giesen ran personal best times of 4:17.39 and 4:17.44.
The Mariners concluded the day of racing winning the 4x400 relay in a time of 3:28.45, edging out Newport of Bellevue. Other top performances included Jack Brady in the 300 hurdles running a personal best 43.96 placing eighth, and Mason Hill in the 400 finishing in seventh running a personal best 52.01.
In a historically fast boys 800 race, 16 boys ran under the two-minute barrier led by a season best performance and first place run of 1:54.82 from Selah's Cooper Quigley. Newport's (Bellevue) Sam Jacobsen was second running 1:55.51, followed by White River's Cole Riley in third running a personal best 1:55.69. Seven personal best efforts were run of the 16 sub two-minute performances.
Sequim's Riley Pyeatt won the girls 800 in a personal best 2:16.63 beating out Peninsula's Hannah Lee, who ran a personal best 2:18.49 for second.
Freshmen standouts Sydney Collier of Skyline and Lily LaPorte of Bishop Blanchet duked it out in a fast girls 1,600 race as both came away with personal best performances. Collier broke the five-minute barrier for the first time in her career running 4:58.89 for the win, while LaPorte ran 5:03.89 to finish in second. Anacortes' Jessica Frydenlund rounded out the top three placing third in a personal best 5:04.10.
Bear Creek's Braelyn Baker had a record setting day in the girls 100 taking down a meet record from 2004 in a time of 11.87 to place first overall beating out Bellevue's Alex Buck (11.91). Baker then won the 200 later on in 25.27 outkicking Redmond's Liv Wreggelsworth (25.63).
Meadowdale's Tresley Love ran 57.61 to edge out Sehome's Jayda Darroch (2nd, 57.67) in the girls 400 by .06 hundredths to win the individual title.
Shorecrest's Amado Toyo won by almost two seconds in the boys 300 hurdles running 39.52 to win his fourth race in the event this season. Sedro-Woolley's Heather Vanderbeek ran a personal best 15.56 to win the girls 100 hurdles, and Redmond's Catalina Montanez ran a personal best 46.70 to place first in the girls 300 hurdles.
Roosevelt's Claire Archer won the girls 3,200 by almost nine seconds in a time of 10:59.64 in her event debut this year. Port Angeles' Jack Gladfelter won the boys 3,200 in a personal best 9:32.68.
Viking Classic
Host Lake Stevens saw many of its own athletes on the girl's side pick-up wins on its home turf led by Chloe Pattison in the hurdle races. The senior standout ran personal best efforts in both the 100 and 300 hurdles as she ran 15.21 and 46.07 to dominate the hurdle field.
Perla Ruiz and Jada Sarrys stood out in the sprint races as Ruiz won the 100 in a personal best 12.99 and Sarrys won the 200 in a personal best 27.26. Sarrys was also second in the 100 in another personal best time of 13.10.
Hallie Carroll won the 800 in a personal best 2:25.11 to round out the Vikings' individual winners on the girl's side.
Lake Washington came away with two wins on the girl's side led by Brooke Mosby in the 400 running 61.49 and Alexa Matora in the 1,600 running a persoanl best 5:10.54. Teammate Ankita Kumar was second in the 1,600, also running a personla best 5:12.84.
Edmonds-Woodway's Stella Smith sneaked past Lake Stevens' Ashley Reeck (11:49.68) to win the girls 3,200 in a personal best time of 11:46.02.
The Squalicum boys picked up three wins from two individuals as Andre Korbmacher took care of business in the 100 and 200 running 10.91 and 22.23, and Tyler Neilson won the 3,200 in a personal best 9:50.68.
The Arlington boys had its fair share of success led by Parker Duskin. The Washington State commit ran personal best efforts in the 110 and 300 hurdles in times of 14.70 and 39.33.
Aiden Emerson and Brandon Moore trade off wins in the distance races. Emerson won the 800 in a personal best 1:52.33, while Moore won the 1,600 in 4:25.86. Moore was also second in the 800 running a personal best 1:54.35.
Lake Stevens finished first and second in the boys 400 led by Trayce Hanks' personal best run of 48.65. Grant Buckmiller ran a personal best 48.68 to follow behind.
35th King's Invite
Cascade Christian went one-two in the girls 100 and 200 races at the 35th King's Invite held at King's High School, led by Kennedy Johnson and Jaylah Laurence. Johnson won both races in a season best 12.97 and a personal best 26.94. Laurence was second in a season best 13.07 and 27.33.
Host King's swept the distance races on the girl's side as Grace Echelbarger won the 800 and varsity 1,600 in personal best times of 2:28.67 and 5:27.07, and Sophia Inglin won the Frosh/Soph 1,600 and 3,200 in personal best times of 5:45.14 and 12:10.94. Kate Gerspacher won a hurdles race for the Knights in the 100s running a personal best time of 17.78.
Will Culberson won two events for King's on the boy's side winning the 110 and 300 hurdle races in 16.40 and 42.54. Also winning a race for the Knights was Lincoln Going in the 400 running a personal best 50.64.
Pope John Paul II's Trevor Dugo won the varsity 1,600 in 4:39.78, a personal best for him, and Cedar Park Christian's (Bothell) won the Frosh/Soph race in 4:46.33.
Grace Academy's Pearce Hess won the boys 100 in a personal best 11.77, and Life Christian's Dominique Valrey, second in the boys 100 (11.88), won the boys 200 in a personal best 23.70.
Valley Christian's Audreya Arnold took first in the girls 300 hurdles running a personal best 51.69.
Mooberry Relays
Riverside’s Jamar Distel made his long awaited season debut winning the boys 1,600 at the Mooberry Relays at Rogers (Spokane) High School in 4:21.50. Gonzaga Prep’s Caleb Richardson was second to Distel in a personal best 4:22.44.
East Valley’s Logan Hofstee ran a great double in the girls 1,600 and 3,200 running personal best efforts of 5:09.05 and 10:55.43. She took first in the 1,600 and second in the 3,200. Asotin’s Chloe Overberg won the 3,200 in a personal best 10:54.61.
The boys 300 hurdle race went wire to wire and came down to a photo finish as Ferris’ Kenlove Oakley ran a personal best 40.83 to edge out Freeman’s Daniel Watts (2nd, 40.87) and Mt. Spokane’s Max Gockley (3rd, 40.97).
Colville’s Jordyn True took first in the girls 100 hurdles running a personal best 15.79.
