We are almost three weeks away from the first day of the 2019 high school track and field season here in the state of Washington. To get you prepared and ready for another great year, here is a look at the Class 4A boys top athletes you keep an eye out for.
Daniel Maton - Camas
800, 1600
A two-time state champion in both the 800 and 1600, Maton is the best combined mid-distance runner in the state by a long shot. Ran 1:50.79 and 4:07.50 in his junior season. He recently signed to run for the University of Washington next year. Maton looks to go his third 800 and 1600 state title in his final high school season.
Joe Waskom - Mount Si
1600, 3200
Waskom was the lone 3200 meter runner from the 4A level last track season to break the nine minute barrier running 8:57.66. The defending state champion in the 3200 looks to go back-to-back in his senior season before joining Maton at the University of Washington next fall. He also won the 4A Cross Country state title.
Luke Houser - Woodinville
800, 1600, 3200
Another University of Washington signee, Houser had a great cross country season as he was the only runner in the entire state of Washington to run under 15 minutes for a 5,000 meter race running 14:57. Finished fourth in 1600 and sixth in the 3200 at the state track meet last spring. Ran 4:10.24 and 9:02.48 last spring. As long as Houser stays healthy, he has a very good chance to challenge Waskom for the 3200 meter state crown.
Riley McDowell - Glacier Peak
1600, 3200
The son of the great Cedarcrest cross country and track coach, Bruce McDowell, Riley looks to bounce back his senior track season after a cross country season filled with ups and downs. Placed third in the 3200 and fifth in the 1600 his junior year at the state track meet. His best times were 4:15.37 and 9:08.33.
Jonas Price - Eisenhower
1600, 3200
After having missed out on winning the state cross title by less than a second this past fall, Price will be primed and ready for the 2019 track season. The best runner on east side of the mountains finished fourth in the 3200 and seventh in the 1600 at the state track meet last spring. Ran 4:15.96 and 9:12.22 in sophomore track season. Price will have his eyes set on the 3200 meter state crown this season.
Others to Watch for:
Brian Martinez - Tahoma: Finished eighth in 800 and 1600 at state last spring. Ran 1:54.18 and 4:16.16.
Riley Moore - Richland: Placed sixth in the 1600 at state running a personal best of 4:15.73.
Ryan Kline - Central Valley: Runner up in the 3200 at state with a personal best of 9:12.86. Qualified for the 1600 as well and placed 10th.
Wil Smith - Lewis & Clark: Placed 5th at the state cross meet last fall.
Jacob Easton - University: 7th at the state cross meet last fall.
