Smokey Point, WA - No. 1 ranked Sehome boys cross country team traveled to Lakewood High School for the annual Nike Hole in the Wall Invite and came home with a 3rd place team trophy scoring 206 points in the varsity division 2 race this last Saturday, Oct. 6.
The Mariners had two finishers in the top 20 with Roman Schroyer and Lucas Cunningham going back-to-back placing 15th and 16th. Schroyer ran 16:36.6 and Cunningham ran 16:38.9.
Schroyer, who has Sehom'es No. 4 runner, for the first time felt really good about his race this season and enjoyed the moment of being the Mariners top runner in this meet.
"This is my really first solid time of the year and I was pretty happy about how I did," said Schroyer. "I was behind Lucas (Cunningham) the entire race and tried to catch up to him through the race. I felt that definitely helped along the way just to hold onto him and keep up with him. Overall, great race today for both of us."
Finishing first overall individually was R.A Long's Nicholas Sarysz and his winning time was 15:46.9. Sarysz said he started out a little slower that anticipated but still managed to make his up to the top spot.
"I came in wanting to run a 5:12 first mile, ended up running 5:15," said Sarysz. "I had a lot of energy to go for the rest and I surged past 15 or so people at the start of the 2nd mile. It came down to the finish when I past the guy in first on the track. It was a battle to the end."
Jessie Foster from Emerald Ridge was 2nd running 15:58.4 and Micah Murphy from Lynnwood was 3rd running 16:07.5.
The top two schools in front of Sehome were Auburn Mountainview taking 1st overall scoring 141 points and Arlington placing 3rd scoring 188 points. Arlington is ranked 4th in the 3A polls.
Moving to the girl's side, El Segundo High School from El Segundo, California had five girls place in the top 20 of the division two race and went home with a 1st place team trophy scoring 33 points.
It was a team effort the entire race according to 1st place finisher James Matlosz. Working as a pack did help set a personal best for Matlosz and capturing an individual win.
"Honestly, I didn't plan to PR during the race," said Matlosz joking. "My team wanted to pack run for the 1st mile and hit 6:20. Our coach told us to go hard after the mile if we were feeling good, and I did feel good and ended up setting a new best time for myself."
El Segundo's other runners in the top 20 include Sophia Zago (3rd, 18:50.3), Nicolette Fulcomer (5th, 19:00.5), Gabriella Lee (7th, 19:07), and Tyler Matlosz (18th, 19:52.7).
No. 6 Port Angeles's (2A) Lauren Larson was 2nd running 18:44.3 and Kynzie DeLeon was 4th running 18:57.3.
