Weekend Roundup: ER's Wirth takes down school record in PLU win

Highlights from invites during the weekend of Sept. 17.

PLU Invite

Conner Wirth of Emerald Ridge proceeded to shatter school records for a second time in 2022 with his most recent performance at the PLU Invite on the Pacific Lutheran University campus in Tacoma.


The senior broke Chris Schroll's 13-year-old record of 15:47.8 by finishing the 5,000 meter boys race in a new personal best time of 15:19.50.


During the track season, Wirth beat Lance Slichko's school record for the 1,600 at Emerald Ridge by clocking a time of 4:18.30 at the South Sound Classic.


Gig Harbor won the boys title over Emerald Ridge 29-40. The Tides placed four runners in the top 10 going 3-6, led by Micah Galeana finishing third overall in 15:40. Following Galeana were Jonathan Miles in fourth (15:40.50), Preston Fradet in fifth (15:42.00) and Tyler Campbell in sixth (16:19.30).


Along with Wirth finishing first, the Jaguars had three more runners finish in the top 10, including Spenser Hensley, who finished seventh in 16:55.80, Aaron Wells, who finished eighth in 17:07.30, and Alejandro Miramontes, who finished in 10th place in 17:15.70.


With 75 points, Rogers' (Puyallup) came in third place overall. The Rams top finisher, Isaac Briggs, ran a personal best time of 15:38.80 to finish in second place.


The Tides also prevailed in the girls race, outscoring Stadium 44 to 49. Reese Morkert set the pace, finishing in second place with a time that was a season best (18:33.7).


Taylor Sletner placed sixth in a personal best 18:52.6 and Kayley Fergus finished 10th in 19:28.7 for Gig Harbor.


Running a personal best time of 18:09.80, Katelyn Galloway took up the individual title for Stadium, which finished in second place. For the Tigers, Madeline McKenna and Natalie Blake raced personal-best timings of 18:45.20 and 18:53.40 to finish fifth and seventh, respectively.


With 78 points and third and fourth place individual times of 18:35.40 and 18:43, Eleanor Jepsen and Olivia DeBoer guided Rogers to third place as a team.

 

South Whidbey Invite

The Lake Stevens girls held off a good Redmond team to win the division 1 team title at the 43rd Annual South Whidbey Invite at South Whidbey High School.


The Vikings, led by Ella Eden's first place run of 19:52.68 over 5,000 meters, scored 44 points to beat out the Mustangs 48 points. With respective times of 20:16.86 and 20:34.20, Alexis Buhman and Hallie Carroll placed fourth and eighth to contribute to Lake Stevens' points.


Ailee Yoshida and Kenzie Seymour, who finished fifth and sixth respectively in times of 20:18.42 and 20:18.82, were the leaders for Redmond.


Madison Griffith and Brooke Henkin placed second and seventh, respectively, in personal best efforts of 20:09.04 and 20:34.01 for Arlington, leading the Eagles to a third-place finish with a score of 107 points.


Arlington took down Lake Stevens in the boys field by a score of 59-69. Kellen Langford (16:52.21, 4th) and Noah Bumgardner (17:14.35, 10th) each earned top 10 finishes to lead the Eagles.


Anthony Long finished third overall for the Vikings in a personal best time of 16:50.77, while teammate Jacob Broadbent followed behind in fifth, running 16:55.4.


The Mustangs were third with 83 points behind the leading efforts of Joseph Sigall placing sixth in 17:02.47 and Modesto Estrada finishing ninth in 17:12.69.


Kamiak's Jaedyn Chase finished second individually in a time of 16:46.62.


Port Townsend's Aliyah Yearian ran the fastest time of the day in the girls division 2 race, running 19:09.97 to win the individual title.


Bellingham won the team title scoring 52 points, beating out Overlake's score of 84. The Bayhawks were led by Laoise Seltz and Zaya Smith, who finished fourth and fifth in times of 20:54.01 and 20:35.56 respectively.


King's Sophia Inglin finished second in 20:18.63, while Meridian's Logan Ignacio was third in 20:29.90.


The Bayhawks also won the boys title over Cedar Park Christian (Bothell), beating the Eagles 47-81. Led by Caleb Guthrie's fourth place run in 17:25.73, Bellingham had four runners finish in the top 10.


Cedarcrest's London Haley won the individual title in 16:37.55, and teammate Nate Bergman was third in 17:21.65.

Salt Creek Invite

Three Port Angeles runners placed in the top 10 in the boys' race at the 44th Salt Creek Invite at Salt Creek Park in Port Angeles, including Jack Gladfelter.


Gladfelter finished first overall and earned his second victory of his senior year with a three-mile personal best time of 15:17.8. For the Roughriders, Langdon Larson placed eighth in 16:31.4 and Maxwell Baeder finished fourth in 16:24.7.


Kingston defeated Nathan Hale for the team title by a score of 60-84, led by Luca Lenz's runner-up finish in a personal best 15:34.3. The Buccaneers' Kaeden Peterson finished seventh place in a personal best run of 16:28.1.


Avery Erickson was the Raiders top finisher, running a personal best 16:25.1 to place fifth.


The Sequim Wolves finished third as a team with 102 points thanks to Colby Ellefson's third-place finish in 15:57.8.


Nathan Hale took home the girls title, defeating Klahowya 38-86. Anika Jones earned a first-place finish for the Raiders in a personal best effort of 18:24.6, defeating Klahowya's Natalie Oathout (18:43.2).


Payton Miksch finished eighth overall for Nathan Hale in 20:29.4.


North Kitsap's Salix Wartes-Kahl finished third overall, running a personal best 19:07.3. The Vikings also were third in the team scoring with 89 points.

 

Wenatchee Invite

Reid Headrick of Medical Lake and Sadie Meyring of Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) did well for the Northeast 1A League at the Wenatchee Invite by taking first place in their respective races at Walla Walla Point Park.


Headrick ran the 5,000 meters in 15:46 to win the boys' title, breaking the 16-minute barrier for the first time in his career. Ciaran St. Hilaire of Tri-Cities Prep came in second in a personal-best time of 16:07.


Hanford defeated Lakeside for the team title 62-71 thanks to three top-10 efforts. Eduardo Tobon and Troy Russo both cracked the top five, placing third and fourth respectively in personal best times of 16:09 and 16:10 for the Falcons. Malek Keller placed 10th in 17:11.


Hayden Blank earned fifth place to lead the second place Eagles, running a personal best time of 16:18.


Wenatchee's Max Meadows and Jason Newman finished sixth and seventh individually for the third place Panthers. Both individuals ran their personal best times, with Meadows finishing at 16:39 and Newman in 16:45.


Meyring held off Wapato's Diana Camargo to win the girls title in a personal best time of 19:05. Camargo crossed the tape at 19:12.


Wenatchee won the team title with 45 points over Lakeside's 76. Haley Loewen, who led the Panthers, finished fifth overall in 19:45, followed by Kristen Jarmin, who finished ninth in a personal-best 20:18.


Brooke Miles ran a personal best 19:37 to lead Naches Valley to a third-place team finish with a score of 77.


Medical Lake's Kayla Ramsey placed third, running a personal best 19:26.

 

Other highlights:

Apple Ridge Invite

Eric Swedin broke the 15-minute barrier for the three-mile race in Yakima, running a personal best time of 14:52 to win the boys individual title. Moses Lake's Camryn Holterhoff came away with the win on the girl's side in a personal best effort of 18:46.


Pasco defeated host Selah for the boys title 49-51. Moses Lake held off Kamiakin for the girls title 33-41.


Mountain West Classic

Lewis and Clark boys finished third as a team in the boys field at the University of Montana Golf Course. Evan Bruce led the Tigers with an eighth-place run in a time of 15:56.1 for the 5,000-meter race. Charles Ledwith followed behind in 13th, running 16:14.7.


East Valley's (Spokane) Logan Hofstee cruised to a second-place finish in the girls race, running a time of 18:20.19. Central Valley's Nicole Bissell trailed in third in a personal best time of 18:49.4


Mead finished fourth in the team standings with 205 points. Charlotte Cullen (18:54.35, 5th) and Raegan Borg (19:10.66, 9th) led the Panthers with top-10 finishes.
